How to sum up my current writing experience? Trying to find words for a band from Singapore, which heavily sounds like being a Scandinavian melodic deathmetal act (in the best sense), giving their own interpretation of historical events that happened in the 18 th century in Bavaria, not too far away from where I live. I’m talking about ASSAULT, who formed in 2006 and recently released their second full-length album “In Aevum Et Illustrata” (meaning “In the Age of the Enlightened”, out since June 30 th, 2021 via Eastbreath Records). Thematically, they got inspiration from the events that led to the original formation of the Illuminati order by Adam Weishaupt in 1776, and they encourage listeners to find their own interpretations in the lyrics too after having listened to the songs.

Music-wise, ASSAULT created a high-energetic melodeath album, as after the cinematic intro “Ingolstadt”, “Oration of Lies” kicks in with full power. From now on, the quintet won’t stop anymore for the rest of “In Aevum Et Illustrata”, delivering eight tracks with hard-hitting drums and bass, epic riffs, as well as impressive vocals that, even though they’re growled, still have a bit of melody in them. All these ingredients are melted by great song-writing and a well-balanced mixing, so the final listening experience is mind-blowing, yet varied. Each song got an amazing, virtuosic guitar solo, and on “1788”, string-wizard Andy Gillion lends a bit of his magic to the track.

I have to say that the cover artwork didn’t prepare me for what can be heard on “In Aevum Et Illustrata”, and maybe caused that I needed three nudges to dive into this album. But the longer I listen to ASSAULT’s music, the better it gets, and I hope with this shout-out, I can prevent other melodeath fans from making the same fault of missing this. Crank it up, and have a blast!
