After a hiatus of 13 years, US Progressive Death Metal powerhouse Dååth are back with a new album called “The Deceivers”, continuing a theme in the title that already began with “The Hinderers” (2007) and “The Concealers” (2009). The band around mastermind Eyal Levi still sees Sean Zatorsky behind the mic, but also went through some changes and features now Krimh on drums, Rafael Trujillo on lead guitar, bassist David Marvuglio and Jesse Zuretti for orchestration. On top of that, they joined forces with several illustrious guests who contributed some marvelous guitar solos, or in case of video game composer Mick Gordon, the sound design and synth to “Purified By Vengeance".
The new record is a scathing critique and exploration of certain societal elements - the deceivers and obstructers in life – musically rolling over us like a nature force, without losing an eye for wonderful, little details. The mighty opener "No Rest No End" is a fine example for this: Having a neoclassical harpsichord / guitar interlude skillfully woven into a thunderstorm of riffs and brutal growls, pushed forward by complex rhythm patterns while being surrounded with mighty orchestration, I’m already sold after the first track… but Dååth won’t give us any rest until the end.
Even though the music is highly technical and performed with razorsharp precision, this does not become a purpose in itself but always serves the songs, that still got plenty of melody, huge harmonies, and a great groove, making "The Deceivers" an epic masterpiece, monstrous and mesmerizing at the same time.
