“Loneliness is the suffering of our time. Even if we’re surrounded by others, we can feel very alone.” With these worlds, ONCE UPON A WINTER open their fourth album “Void Moments of Inertia”, which came out on March 18th, 2022. The beautiful cover artwork reflects this message in an intense way as well. What started as a solo project by Greek musician Ilias Kakanis in 2017, and with a debut that gathered significant attention, transformed into a full band in 2018, offering atmospheric instrumental music.
Stylistically, their work is hard to grab, as they move smoothly through various styles, building an intense, yet calming atmosphere, with the focus on mesmerizing melodies and beautiful harmonies. Besides the classical rock instruments guitar, bass and drums, they give a lot of space to violin, saxophone and piano, which adds something special to their sound. The songs flow into each other naturally, mostly played rather slow, with some up-tempo parts in between. You’ll find hints from black metal to classic, gothic, doom or melodic rock, always performed aesthetically together. In the end, however you might try to pigeonhole them, it is heart-warming wonderful music. Dive in :-)
